Feedback from the HETI-UK Autumn Seminar October 2024

Elspeth O’Donnell (Secretary ACPEA) and Vivien Savage (South West Regional Representative ACPEA) attended the HETI-UK Autumn Seminar at The Horse Course, Dorset, on 11 October 2024. They kindly shared their reflections following the event.

‘Elspeth  and I were the only physiotherapists there. It was interesting to see how many different types of difficulties/conditions can be improved by spending time interacting with equines. Everyone’s really!

I admit that I am not knowledgeable about research although I realise the need for it in our field. It was heartening to see researchers who were able to adjust their methods of data collection and really understand the client base of the service providers collecting the data. For example, producing appropriate questionnaires at appropriate times.

It was also a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to experience the approach used at The Horse Course. Interestingly it is very similar to the Parelli approach to training and solving problems with equines (which I had some experience of while in the USA working at a Therapeutic Riding establishment).  Today we worked with ponies that are all pre-trained and the approach is to work with the clients, teaching them  to interact with the equine in the same way.   This teaches them that they need to develop a calm and focused approach, to get a response from the equine.  This then carries on it to LIFE.’

Elspeth said:

‘ Most of the other participants were involved in working with the Equine in groundwork, for mental health and wellbeing benefits.

The focus of the day was on exploring pathways to produce effective research to support Equine Assisted Activities.   There is a good collaboration established in this part of the country with Researchers from Bournemouth and Plymouth Universities, particularly with The Horse Course, and Sirona

An excellent presentation on the background to planning research, and the wealth of stored data that already exists, was given by Anne Hathaway ( Bournemouth Uni).    I have approached her to present something similar for ACPEA CPD.

Highlight for Vivien was the time we were allowed with some equines of The Horse Course in the outdoor arena, working !-! with a facilitator, to appreciate their approach to Equine/client/facilitator interaction.

This seminar focussed on Research around the benefits to humans.  Apparently the next one will be looking at the value to Equines, and how to initiate this research.’

A huge thank you to Vivien and Elspeth for sharing their thoughts and attending to represent ACPEA at this HETI-UK event.

We would love you hear from you if you’ve been to an event that other ACPEA members might find interesting, inspiring or educational so that we can spread the word via the ACPEA website or Facebook page.
