About this eventConformation: A Biomechanical Perspective
Have you ever wondered whether it’s better to select a horse with a long or a short back, a more or less angulated hock, high or low withers? Would you like to know which conformational features make it difficult for a horse to progress beyond the intermediate levels of competition? Are you curious about how training might change a horse’s posture and body shape? If so, you might enjoy this well-illustrated 2-hour session as it explores the pros and cons of a variety of conformational features of the neck, back and limbs in relation to how they affect the movement and performance of sport horses.
For all attendees, CPD certificates available as well as a “view only” recording of the session with a 30 day access pass. There will also be a Q and A session with ample opportunity to post questions via our interactive Q&A panel.

Meredith Stephens
Meredith Stephens holds a master’s and doctorate in Physical Therapy and a bachelor’s in Exercise Physiology. She is a certified STOTT Pilates instructor, Board Certified Structural Integrator (BCSI), licensed board certified massage therapist. She has over 25 years experience in health, wellness and rehabilitation and has long been fascinated by the relationship of the fascial system and the central nervous system (CNS). Of particular interest is the role myofascial continuities and tensegral relationships play in force transmission, postural patterns and movement and how these are impacted by injury, pain as well as daily movement practices and activities. This holistic view strongly influences her treatment approach.
Dr. Stephens is a Certified C2 Schroth Barcelona School Physical Therapist- Rigo Method scoliosis physical therapist and focuses her practice on adults with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and degenerative lumbar scoliosis. She integrates her work as a structural integrator and Schroth practitioner to assist a wide variety of clients in finding a more neutral static and dynamic alignment.
She has worked over 12 years for Anatomy Trains as an instructor, content creator and US Education Manager and has presented both nationally and internationally in fascia, tensegrity, regional anatomy, postural assessment, scoliosis, osteoporosis, fascial movement and manual therapy interventions. She co-created STOTT PILATES Fascial Movement course with PJ O’Clair.
Meredith has worked with professional sports teams, dancers, equestrians and athletes and has presented at symposiums and conferences for Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, bodyworkers and exercise professionals.
“My goal is to educate and inspire students to learn more about the workings of the human body, fascia, tensegrity and how they can affect positive change in their clients.”

Rider Biomechanics: Improving Horse and Rider Performance with Dr. Russell MacKechnie-Guire
About this event: Rider Biomechanics: Improving Horse and Rider Performance with Dr. Russell MacKechnie-Guire
This course will look at the biomechanics of the rider and the effect that the rider and their biomechanics can have on equine health and performance.
Topics to be covered:
Rider biomechanics - understanding the demands of riding from a biomechanical aspect
Rider asymmetry and its effect on equine performance
Effect that saddle design has on rider biomechanics
Assessing rider asymmetry
Specific rider-based exercises to improve rider symmetry
Evidence based solutions to help restore rider function
For all attendees, CPD certificates available as well as a “view only” recording of the webinar with a 14 day access pass. There will also be a Q and A session with ample opportunity to post questions via our interactive Q&A panel
Dr. Russell MacKechnie-Guire:
Russell MacKechnie-Guire graduated from Warwickshire College in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Equine and Human Sports Science and now holds a PhD in Equine Biomechanics, graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in 2019. Russell’s thesis was titled ‘The Relationship between Saddle and Rider Kinematics, Equine Locomotion, and Thoracolumbar Pressures in Sports Horses’. Russell is based at Centaur Biomechanics, a company which he founded in 2006. He has extensively researched the effect that tack (saddle, bridle and girth) has on equine health and performance. Russell’s current area of research is horse-saddle-rider interaction, spinal kinematics in horses when ridden over ground and the effect that rider asymmetry has on equine back movement. In addition, Russell collaborates with researchers from around the world on various research projects associated with equine health and performance. He regularly presents his work at international meetings throughout the world and is a consultant for the British Equestrian Federations World Class, Team GBR programme. Russell is a member of the Team GBR’s Scientific Advisory Group, Society of Master Saddlers Scientific Advisory Group and chairs the horse+rider subgroup, part of the International Task force on Laterality in Sports Horses.
