Overview
Joanna Smith is a Chartered Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with specialist interests in persistent pain, rehabilitation, rider biomechanics and the horse–human relationship.
Working within musculoskeletal physiotherapy, Joanna has a particular interest in the biopsychosocial factors that influence health, wellbeing and recovery. She is especially interested in persistent musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, where physical, psychological and social factors interact to influence a person's experience of pain and function.
Joanna was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Advancing Practice with Distinction, specialising in Equine-Assisted Therapy. Her academic interests focus on the potential role of horses within healthcare and the ways in which equine-assisted approaches may support people living with musculoskeletal conditions.
Alongside her physiotherapy work, Joanna is trained in Pilates instruction and breathing education, with particular interests in movement quality, body awareness and self-management. She is currently developing Equine-Assisted Therapy services in the Midlands, with the aim of creating innovative, evidence-informed opportunities for people with musculoskeletal conditions to engage with horses as part of their wider health and wellbeing journey.
Joanna is passionate about bridging the worlds of physiotherapy, equestrian practice and Equine-Assisted Therapy while maintaining a strong commitment to both human and equine welfare.
