Feedback from EEATN 4th Biannual Conference

Overview of the Conference

The 4th EEATN Biannual Conference took place in Lisbon from 26th to 28th September, generously hosted by the Portuguese team under the leadership of Ines Figueiredo. The event welcomed 19 participants representing seven European countries, drawing together a diverse group that included physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychomotor therapists, researchers, equine specialists, academics, and psychologists.

Key Areas Addressed in the Programme

The conference agenda focused on several crucial topics related to equine assisted therapy. A major area of exploration was Human-Equine Interaction, with detailed discussions on the dynamics and therapeutic advantages stemming from the relationships formed between clients and horses. Another important subject was the use of donkeys in Equine Assisted Services (EAS), where their distinct contributions and suitability for a range of client needs were highlighted.

Participants also delved into the effects of equine movement on clients, emphasising how specific patterns of movement can have a significant therapeutic impact. The welfare of equines was also a key topic, with discussions underscoring the necessity of safeguarding the health and wellbeing of therapy animals as a fundamental aspect of effective therapeutic practice.

Additionally, the conference featured updates and feedback regarding the ongoing project on the backward prone position, offering insights into its development and practical application within therapeutic contexts.

Sharing Knowledge and Social Experiences

Throughout the conference, attendees exchanged knowledge and experiences both formally during presentations and informally via social interactions. The group enjoyed the opportunity to connect, share meals, and explore the city together, all of which enhanced the overall sense of community. The excellent hospitality of the hosts was evident in the quality of food provided and the thoughtfully organised activities.

Social and Cultural Activities

Participants enjoyed a visit to the Royal Family’s summer palace in Sintra as well as the Royal stables, adding a rich cultural dimension to the event. Group meals at various Lisbon restaurants and those provided during the working days by the hosts further contributed to the warm and collaborative atmosphere.

Collaboration and Community Building

The conference fostered strong collaboration, with all attendees united by the shared aim of advancing equine assisted therapy for clients across Europe and supporting the ongoing growth of the network’s members. The event saw the formation of new friendships and the renewal of existing ones, with lively yet non-judgemental discussions contributing to a positive and inclusive environment.

Encouragement to Join the Network

In light of the educational and supportive environment provided by the network, all are encouraged to consider joining, benefitting from opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional growth.
